There are 4,000 different types of wasps in the United States, according to the National Pest Management Association. Wasps are a common summertime nuisance, usually active during the day before they return to their nests at dark. Here are the safest and easiest ways to keep wasps away.
You can include two tablespoons of dish soap into a spray bottle filled with water and spray small, hanging nests.
Research published in the Journal of Pest Management Science found that a combination blend of clove, geranium, and lemongrass essential oils successfully repelled wasps. Mix several drops of each oil with water and dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray and coat areas on the outside of your home where wasps like to build nests, such as under eaves, porch roofs, and other ledges or crevices.
Peppermint oil mixed with water also works.
Preventative measures are key. Patching holes in window screens or sealing tiny cracks, such as those around siding or where power lines enter the home. Experts recommend the best time for this maintenance is in late Fall after most worker wasps have died off, or in early spring before nests become active. If you find a nest inside your home, trying to seal it inside of the wall will force the insects through vents or to chew through drywall.
Research from the Universe of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension found that wasp problems are typically worse in yards that have multiple food sources from exposed garbage, recycling bins, or composts. Tightly sealing lids to garbage cans and keeping sugary beverages and exposed food out of wasp areas is ideal.
